Fourth grade science is centered on studying the geological aspects of Utah. Southern Utah provides a great example of the effects of physical erosion, which is a topic that is directly linked to the Utah science curriculum. The demonstration is set up as though students are taking a “field trip” to examine different locations in southern Utah, including the San Rafael Swell, Green River, Goblin Valley, and Bryce Canyon. Students have the opportunity to view different examples of physical erosion, to predict the causes of this type of erosion, and to compare and contrast the formations in each location. Visuals, in addition to predictions, then followed by explanations solidify a student’s knowledge of how weathering affects the creation of rocks and canyons. Students will hopefully understand that there is an important and a relevant meaning behind geology because it tells us about the past, and it may also serve a predictor for the future.
